No way do you win the coin flip and go against the wind. Neither of these teams are used to being scored on first. You have to take the 25-30 mph wind. Mustang had to win the flip!

Yes, MVLA won the toss and the captains were told to take the wind in the first half. It is what it is.

The coaches decision was the correct one for many reasons.
There is an old saying in sports " you go to the dance with who brung ya"!
MVLA defense has yielded maybe 10 goals over the past season in over 50 games and 0 in the last 2 years of State Cup. That cannot be overlooked and then you throw in the fact that the weather was supposed to get worse as day went on and boom...excellent decision to go with your strength in the back. If they had given up o or 1 and held and obtained the wind and rain 2nd half then they were right there where they wanted to be with 2nd half advantage with a commanding pyschologiacal factor...unfortunatley mother nature changed her mind but the decision to go with what got you there and set the tone ( the most important time in a soccer game- first 10 minutes) is not to be 2nd guessed....it is what it is and the chips fell the way were supposed today. Decision to try and shut down first half ..although ended up with not the best result was the correct thing with the make up of style and players on the team. In the end both goals were not "wind-aided" at all and Fury won...this is a non-issue.

Fury played a great game and dominated Lightning in every part of the field. Both teams showed lots of skill and athleticism. It was a much better played final than last year when nerves seemed to get the better of everyone. As always, win or lose, Mustang showed great class. Good luck in Hawaii.

Sorry....I disagree whole heartedly! Who would not want the advantage in the first ten minutes, or thirty minutes? This is soccer, where the first goal wins 98% of the time. The captains must have misinterpreted the coaches direction. It is ludicrous to put your team against a 25 mph wind! Either the coaches blew it or the captains blew it. In my humble opinion, whoever won the toss should have taken the advantage. Look, I videotaped the game, and watched it twice. Mustang completely dominated. But is the game different if MVLA scores first? I think so. MVLA beat Mustang last year in the state championship. If Mustang goes down 1-0. how would the 12 year olds react?
On another note, I overheard a conversation about a girl who had laser surgery on her foot THIS WEEK and still played for MVLA. This girl used to play for Mustang. Tough girl.
Anyway, moot point. Next year I hope we can challenge Mustang. They certainly have set the bar. Good luck in Hawaii!

Brandi,
My daughter was an MVLA co-captain today. The girls did not misunderstand the instructions of their coach regarding the coin toss. They had no reason to second guess her call. For those of you who have followed MVLA, you would know that they always take the sun in their eyes, the downhill slope, the mud pit goal, or in todays case the wind against them, in the first half. It has been a formula that has historically worked well for them.
A few corrections: We do not have a player on our team who had laser surgery on her foot this week. We do not have a player on our team who used to play for Mustang.

There was a small Bay Oaks Bombers contingent in attendance yesterday in Morgan Hill: 5 players, 3 parents, and one camcorder! And a rainy Saturday is the perfect time to edit video, so here it is:
MVLA Lightning vs. Mustang Fury

MVLA Mom,
Brandi overheard correctly. Our starting forward had a laser treatment earlier in the week. Her dad told a few of us. I don't think it was widely known. There was no way she was going to miss the game since she grew up playing with the Mustang girls. Inspirational stuff! The team knew, at least my daughter, and thought it was great she was going to play no matter what.

El Guapo - I just PMd you. I suspect you are not with our team. Which one of our starting forwards are you talking about? I count 4 who are rotated in the starting spots on a regular basis. And we do not have a player on our team that has ever played on a Mustang team. You might be "crazy for MVLA" but are most likely not part of MVLA.
