I've solved some of the tryout "offer drama" by locking in players and then working with other coaches for trade outs  the next week. Sometimes the parents go kicking and screaming, but usually by then they don't have many  options.

The hard part is when it is not a fair value for value trade. This year, just to sweeten a deal,  we were given an immediate "free give back" and guaranteed a"first right of refusal" for next year. I also got guest rights to two of my trades. I am already talking with parents and deciding on the free give back. Although it sure is nice to sit on those sometimes.

To me, it is always easy to figure these things out. We just can't get too child/family centered in the process ;-)

"Free Give Back"?  That is ridiculous.  Terrible.  That can never work in a three team deal.

Better to go with a "Player to be Named" later.  Base it on the production of the principals.  If you need to waive the player, it just changes the compensatory pick.

Get rid of tryouts.   Just go to player interest and club/team recruiting.  Sometimes the recruiting avenue results in finding a better match for your team then you do at tryouts.    Once fall league/State Cup starts, rosters are locked, no player moves are allowed.

What about when a player moves into the area mid-season? She has to wait until the following tryout? Not feasible.

Whould you trade four Rec for one A teamer? Or is it better to take one B teamer and One player to be named later?
I always had a hard time when yoy get close to the end of the season. You see "Those" teams just packing it in. Losing the last few games. So they can get a better draft pick. I am so glad all the clubs are moving to the Lottery system. For the number one draft choice.

No tryouts so this would not be an issue.  If the player moved during the roster lock period, Norcal has a rule exception for just that scenario.

So tryouts are over.. Finally. How do the different clubs and coaches feel they did at tryouts. Were there suprises in the turn outs or who showed up at your tryouts? How are the parents feeling after all the driving and waiting at tryouts.
For this parent, I am glad we are finally past this part.

Agreed glad this part is over.  I had 2 or 3 clubs in mind for my son to tryout for, but eventually just narrowed it down to one.  There were 60 kids competing for 36 slots - and 10 goalies for 3 slots and my son got one of the offers.  Now he just has to take advantage of the training, work hard and hopefully beat the A team kid out next year!

If it wasn't your child's year - don't give up. The whole process is imperfect and usually ends up with some teams frantically looking for a last player or three to fill a roster. ...while in a club just down the street their are a few kids that are still looking for a team. Often, kids can find homes playing for another age group if they are flexible.

If you didn't get the good call, please keep working. Many coaches are still working together  to find homes for players across all age groups and they are happy to share information. I know it is awkward, but your best source of information is the very coach that coudn't put your child on their  team.

A nice service this board could provide is helping people connect. If your child is looking for a team, put it out there...we could all try to help.
