I dispute your always statement.
I'll also add that packing it in and playing not to lose is lame and doesn't count as defense. It's actually kind of lazy on the coach's part.

There's stuff that I believe to be lame, but I'm actually glad that an opponent does it because how else does a player learn to deal with it? Ideally, one hopes to see every kind of defense and every kind of attack and every style of play, etc. One of the joys of youth soccer is watching players successful adjust to dealing with some aspect of the game that they've never encountered before.

Of course, by doing so a coach forfeits any claim that he/she values development over winning. It really doesn't take much effort or talent to play that way.

You're assuming that I am referring strictly to over-matched state cup prelimiinary matches. Many teams, even so called top level teams, use this strategy as a base style of play. Even moreso with the Southern California teams in my experience. It's also not a complaint so much as an observation related to your statemet that defense (GKing specifically) is more valuable than the ability to create goals, which was the original point.
To the development point, I'm not concerned in relation to my own daughter's team.

IMO defense is most important. Offense makes for a pleasurable watch.
I don't beleieve you can win a championship with a good offense and mediocre defense....but you can with a good defense and mediocre offense.
A good defense can hold a good offense at bay, draw them in and counter attack. Boring but effective.
Now which U13 teams have good defenses?

I think defense is more of a fluid concept with soccer than other sports due to the frequency of possession change. Every player on the team becomes a defender the minute possession is lost so, in that essence, defense is inseparable from offense.
The discussion was about positions, or rather the importance of the skillset certain positions require. A player that can score or facilitate is infinitely more valuable and harder to come by than any other position including GK’s. A good attacking player must be a good defender, but a good defender doesn’t have to possess attacking skills. Not to oversimplify, but you HAVE to score to win.

Noticed SRU and Rage had a rough outing in ECNL up in WA. Did SRU lose some girls on that ICE team? I thought they were much better than that.
RAGE U14 is going to be lucky to win more than 2 games this year. Next up MVLA, Mustang Magic and then the dream team De Anza bunch.
